Dr. Mohammed Arifuddin Sohel is working as  Professor and Head of Electronics and Communication Engineering Department of Muffakham Jah College of Engineering and Technology, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad.

 The three day IoT Workshop aims to provide its participants with the necessary introductory basic information on the IoT, how it works, basic IoT programming and IoT applications. During the workshop, in addition to theoretical background information, a number of hands on experiments will also be provided using various types of  IoT elements and kits for different types of basic applications. Moreover, the participants (in a group of four persons) will be challenged to design innovative IoT applications, to be presented at the end of the workshop. A total of Rp 4,000,000 cash prizes will be presented to the winners.

Workshop 1 contents:

Chapter 1: The Internet of Things: An Overview
  • The flavor of the Internet of Things, The Technology of the Internet of Things, Design Principles for Connected Devices, Calm and Ambient Technology, Privacy Web Thinking for Connected Devices.
  • IoT Applications – Smart Cities, Smart Energy and Smart Grid, Smart Transportation and Mobility, Smart House, Smart buildings and Infrastructure Smart Factory and smart Manufacturing, Smart health, Food and Water tracking (Ref. 2)
  • IoT and related future technologies – Cloud Computing, Semantic technologies, Autonomy, Properties of autonomic IoT systems (Ref. 2)
Chapter 2: Internet Principles and communication technology
  • Internet Communications: An Overview – IP, TCP, IP protocol Suite, UDP. IP addresses – DNS, Static and Dynamic IP addresses, MAC Addresses, TCP and UDP Ports, Application Layer Protocols – HTTP, HTTPS
  • Communication technology, IoT services and Processes, Data management – Data collection and analysis, Big Data.
Chapter 3: IOT System Design
  • Cost versus Ease of Production, Prototypes and Production, Open Source versus Closed Source.  Prototyping Embedded Devices – Sensors, Actuators, Microcontrollers, SoC, Choosing a platform Prototyping Hardware platform – Arduino, Raspberry Pi, BeagleBone Black, Wizbee. Prototyping the physical design – Laser Cutting, 3D printing, CNC Milling
  • Device Level Energy Issues – Low power communication, Energy Harvesting
 Chapter 4: API Development and Embedded programming
  • Getting started with API, writing a new API, Real time Reactions, Other Protocols, Techniques for writing embedded code: Memory management, Performance and Battery Life, Libraries, Debugging
  • IoT Systems-  Logical Design using Node MCU, Physical Devices and Endpoints, Programming NODE MCU with Embedded C Language
 Chapter 5: Cloud computing and Data analytics and IoT Product Manufacturing
  • Introduction to Cloud storage models and Communication APIs, Amazon webservices for IoT, Skynet IoT Messaging Platform.
  • Introduction to Data Analytics for IoT
  • Case studies illustrating IoT Design – Smart Lighting, Weather Monitoring, Smart Irrigation.
  • Business model for IoT product manufacturing, IoT Startups, Mass manufacturing, Ethical issues in IoT.

Workshop 1 fees:

Interested participants are requested to register in advance, as seats are limited. Ideally, each institution is expected to send a staff member and 3 students, to form a team. The Workshop Registration fee: Rp 500,000 (Staff member); Rp 250,000 for each student; and Rp 75,000 for IEEE CASS Member.

Workshop 2:

Title
Reliability from Design, Manufacture to Operation and Maintenance
   (Case Study: Geothermal Tubing, Casing and Pipeline)

Reliability and quality of the product have to be designed in such that the product will last during the operation according to the pre-determined design life time. In case of geothermal tubing, casing and pipeline design process, material selection phase is the first step to be taken. Aggressive environment with high pressure and high temperature will require corrosion resistant and high strength materials or corrosion resistance alloy (CRA),  so that the pipe and tube will not fail during the plant operation, the condition leading to plant operation with high reliability and safety and low risk.

In this workshop, the trainee will be introduced to reliability engineering applicable for pipe and tube manufacture, construction and operation phases. Reliability tools such as Failure Mode, Effect, and Criticality Analysis (FMECA), Weibull Analysis, and Statistics Quality Control Tools used during manufacture phase would be explained. Possible damage mechanism in typical geothermal environment, failure modes and structural reliability analysis to determine the damage rates and remaining life of the tube and pipeline would also be explained. This reliability concept is then used to prioritize the inspection, maintenance and repair plan during geothermal power plant operation. Having proper reliability management put in place, the geothermal plant will have annual high availability and low un-planned shutdown rate.
